DIY: Baby shower bird

If you remember this post from January - I promised a DIY on the bird pictured here..

I am finally getting around to it! Yay! I found an idea similar to this but could not find birds to buy that were under $50 a bird! That is ridiculous! And they weren't even cute! I figured I could make them myself for lots cheaper and much cuter.  Before you think I am nuts - I did make 3 of these, flower garland, and small flowers for the chalkboards - I was on bed rest for a few weeks at the end of my pregnancy and it left lots of time to do little crafty things. Thankfully the hubs stayed home to watch the munchkin and I just sewed and sewed until I finished! 

What you will need:

• 2 patterns of fabric. I found that felt really sews the best for the base and then quilting squares for the wing and beak. The DIY is on the bird I used the quilting square for, so it works, but it is not as easy to work with 
• Thread in complimentary colors to your fabric
• sewing needle
• 10 seed beads in the color you want for the eyes (like you can buy only ten..mine were leftover from my beading extravaganza)
• Stuffing
• Scissors

Step 1: Cut out your pieces. You will need 2 bodies, 2 wings, and 1 beak (triangle). I just drew a shape I liked and then used it as a pattern.

Step 2: Sew the wing onto each body. I used yellow thread so that it stood out

Step 3: Sew on the eyes. First I lined up the bodies on top of each other and then placed a needle through it and then marked it with a pen so that the eyes would be in the same place when it was all said and done. The first one I did, I did not do this and my bird looked slightly deranged. 

Step 4: Sew the two pieces together - stop once you have about an inch left. I made sure to not have the leftover inch on the tail because it would be too flimsy. Keep the needle threaded so that you have one continuous piece of thread. 

Step 5: Stuff the bird until you can't stuff it any more. It takes more than you think!

Step6: Sew up the remaining inch and do a loop stitch to knot it up. 

You are done! It took me about 20- 30 minutes to do each bird. I was really pleased with how they turned out! The momma-to-be loved them and they were the perfect piece to my centerpieces.
